Akon 2019 Medals
Akon 2007 was my very first con. Ever.
So it was an honor to be asked to guest/judge and make the medals for the convention this year.
I'd never made medals before, but count myself lucky that I have a brother who also does props and was able to give me some great tips. I also used my TwitchCon medal as reference for how the fabric should be done.
The masters were mocked up in Zbrush, with a common design theme to keep everything easy. I was given free reign when designing the judges medals, and decided to have our logos as the center pieces.
A total of 23 masters were printed in ABS on my Polyprinter 229. To speed up finishing, each was given a 15 min cold vapor bath, then primed and sanded to the appropriate finish for cold casting.
For ease on my part, the required 30 video game medals where done from 10 molds; with gold, aluminium and bronze powder used to create the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals.
Each cosplay related medal was done with Alumalite gold powder.
To save time and silicone, the mold walls were 3d modeled and printed.
Molded with Mold Max 30 and cast with Onyx fast. Disks of metal were added to the resin to help give each medals a more believable weight.
