Sculpting gauntlets (AEW and Lies of P)

9/2/2024

Two major commissions came to light recently. At the end of August, the House of Black debuted the 3 gauntlets that I worked with Kiril of Flux Tide Designs on. And during DragonCon, Kyle of Cute Monster Props debuted his Lies of P cosplay. Both involved working in 3d for use on a person's body. Which is soo much different than just making something that the hands interact with, like a weapon.

For the House of Black gauntlets, I did the concepts with art direction by Flux Tide Designs, as well as all of the 3d work. The base was started on the arm that can be found in Zbrush, then adjusted for real world proportions. I was also provided the base gloves to get a better measurement of what the clients would wear and their respective size.

Feathers replaced with real feathers in final piece, along with channels for real leather.
Each of the 3 break apart/connect with magnets for easy removal.
Kiril handled the printing, sanding, painting and finishing of the trio. Some of the printing was done via FDM and others via resin.
Along with those, I worked on an arm for Kyle. He provided two scans of his arm, with one focusing on this hand. He'd also attached a piece of plastic to his forearm for use in scaling. I had to do a bit of clean up and combining because neither scan would have worked as is.

To keep it comfortable, Kyle cast the bicep and parts of the hands out of a flexible material and managed to make them look metallic, which can be pretty difficult but turned out beautifully.

If you're interested in more in-depth look at how they made the rest of these projects, you should check out their other socials. They both post great stuff.

On my part, I learned I need to be extra precise with the fingers. Both projects needed them adjusted/reprinted. I'm hoping to add a higher detail 3d scanned male hand to my library for future projects, just to make sure mistakes like this don't happen again.

Sword of Dios files up on my shop!

Took forever, but I'm finally done with the creation of this 3D kit.
Years ago, I made a Sword of Dios resin-casted kit that was pretty popular. I feel like I sent out 1-2 of those swords a week. Even sent them off to Australia and Germany.

Product photo for my Etsy that showed off the resin kit. RIP
Needless to say, I got burned out making them so often. And I don't really do resin kits anymore... But I've been hit up a bunch by people who thought that I had made the OG via 3d printing (sorry, totally hand sculpted ;-;) So, I had nothing to offer them, until now.
I sculpted this in Zbrush, measuring as I went along, to try and match the dimensions as much as possible.
3D files include the 3 pieces that make up the sword handle and then 5 pieces for the blade. It's HIGHLY recommended to use a 5mm rod to help strengthen the print and aid with alignment, as I did hollow the blade to incorporate one.

Elden Ring Cosplay

Finally starting that Elden Ring cosplay, and not any of the characters that I initially thought I'd do.
After 150 hours (I've still not finished my first play through), I'm fallen in love with the starting Warrior set. The leather, the beads and coins, the stitching... It's everything I've been looking for in a more fabric based cosplay.
First step was to get in-game shots, but those are okay. What I really wanted was the actual in-game assets. Which I found thanks to a discord group.
I took those assets (model and textures) and applied them in Marmoset to get a better reference. There, I was able to zoom in and see how things overlap, play with materials to make certain things stand out and make others disappear.

I was also able to directly reference the texture sheets to get more detail for the creation of the decorative bits. The plan is to print some inversely to make a hard resin mold and then use PMC aka precious metal clay to create real metallic pieces. Other will be printed the normal way, with silicone molds created and then cold cast. Really depends on the location, thickness and durability needed for the piece.

Currently got a good amount of the decorative bits modeled in Zbrush, as well as the chest piece patterned out.

Changes on the way

You may have noticed some changes on my site. Been consolidating some pages and making things easier to navigate. Main reason is because I'm going to be closing my Etsy site and moving all my wares to this site.
I'm not going to be bringing everything back though. I'm going to be focusing on fan garage kits and even try to make my own original kits.
Stay tuned!

Next fan kit: Frozen Flame

I want to continue with the CT/CC love, so I updated my old Frozen Flame model for print. My brother printed it off on his Form2.

I plan to follow a similar pipeline like what I did with Frog, but I'll be using transparent resins. Might even try to make it glow in the dark.

2021, huh?

I blinked and it was 2021.

Finally finished Frog and got him posted to Etsy. I'll only be making 50 kits. Each comes with a fancy card to show it's number in the series.

Next figurine will probably be the Frozen Flame. I like the idea of playing around with casting crystal, especially since I now have a pressure pot. I've done crystal stuff before, but it always involved a lot of cleanup.

What a year

2020 has really been something...
On a high note, I've finally gotten my first 3D industry job. I'm working for an animation start up as a character artist.  You might be able to see some of my stuff on YT in the coming months.
Prop and figurine-wise, I'm still slowing working on Frog. I think I've stalled because I'm weary of how tedious claying him up is going to be. In the mean time, I've made a mini sealed chest from CT. I'm also selling a few on my Etsy.
Oh, and I have an amazing collaboration in the works with one of my prop buddies. Expect to see more on that near the end of the year.
My apologies for the lack of updates. I'm more active on my insta and twitter if you need more art uploads.
