Dark Souls 3 - Artorias Helm
I knew that I wanted to make this helmet the moment I started playing Dark Souls 1 earlier this year. Unfortunately, the reference from DS1 is horrible and I had to wait till Dark Souls 3 came out (just a few months later thankfully). This is my first project in which I modeled the object completely by myself in Zbrush. It was cut into printable segments with NetFabb and then printed on the highest quality setting on my Polyprinter 229. It took over 100 hours and at least 1 full roll of ABS filament. All the sections were glued together with an ABS slurry and then I brushed on a few coats of Acetone to help smooth the lines down and make finishing easier. And lines left were filled with either with Rustoleum Filler Primer or Spot Putty. The master was sanded all the way up to 3000 grit sandpaper in prep for cold casting later on.
The actual mold is Rebound 25 with a Plasti Paste II mother mold, made in three sections. The first cast was done with Aluminum powder for cold casting and buffed with fine steel wool, then finished with acrylics for weathering and Rub n Buff in silver for highlights.
The plume is an old wig that I cut apart. The main body is wrapped around some shaped hanger wire, and then secured with strips of leather. It fits into the helm through a hole and then is secured with apoxie.
