Funimation/Toei - Saiyaman Helmet
This past March, I got my first contract with a big studio. Funimation reached out to me to create a Saiyaman Helmet for a live-action commercial they were doing for the release of DBZ:Kai. I had two weeks.
I modeled the helmet in 3DSMax, swept it through Netfab for sizing and slicing, and then printed it on my Polyprinter 229 in ABS. All the pieces were attached with ABS slurry, a mixture of ABS scraps and acetone. A layer of filler primer was applied before sanding from 200 grit to 1000 grit.
Finding the specific orange of the helmet proved to be a challenge. I usually use Duplicolor car paint for my props, but they don't make the correct orange. I lucked upon it when checking a local hobby shop.
I'm partculary proud of how I attached the antenna. I was worried about them falling of because of the actor's movement, so I embedded a short wire into the base of the antenna that would run into the helmet itself to reinforce the attachment.
It was well padded with bedding foam attached with velcro, and the chin strap also attached with velcro.
The visor buck was printed and finished separate and my buddy at Detravoid Concept vacuum formed the visor for me.
I sadly didn't get a photo shoot with it before handing it off.
