Moss - Quill Sword and Gauntlet
From the moment I saw the E3 trailer for Moss, I knew I wanted to some how make Quill's sword and gauntlet. It was originally going to include a Kigu version of her, but I live in Texas and that's a death sentence. I created a simple human version of her that was a spunky warrior.
The basic outline of the sword was modeled in Fusion 360 and then transferred to Zbrush for further sculpting. The final sculpt was printed in ABS in 12 pieces and the assembled with ABS slurry. It was finished with layers of Rustoleum Filler Primer and lots of sanding. 80 grit at first, leading up to 220 grit. Then a layer of red primer and wet sanding up to 1500 grit. The final color was a rattle can from Hobbytown.
The gauntlet was difficult to design. The E3 trailer, illustrations and animation tests that I found each had slight differences in how it looked. I took what I wanted from each for a real world design. It started off with a small paper pattern that I cut up, then created a foam pattern for testing. After some modifications to that, it was transferred to veg tan leather. The hand portion is 2-3 oz and the arm is 4-5 oz. The arm is hand stitched with waxed white thread that took the green dye really well. Before dyeing, the edges of the leather pieces were smoothed. After dyeing, it was finished with Saddle Lac.
